What: Battle of the Books is a program that encourages children to read a variety of good books by outstanding authors of children's literature. The list consists of forty books from many different genres. Included are books that are historical fiction, humor, science fiction, adventure, mystery, fantasy, and realistic fiction. If the student participates in the Battle of the Books, then all books read for this team count towards their ARC goal.
Who: Teams from all over the El Paso County area participate. Students are asked to read as many of the forty books as possible. Teams are chosen from each fifth grade class based on the number of books they have read and how well they remember details. Selection at Imagine will be throughout the school year as we will have dates the students must have completed certain numbers of books.
When: If the student is interested in participating, it highly recommended that they begin reading over the summer! (If no reading is done over the summer, then the expectation will be approximately one book completed per week throughout the school year.) The local libraries keep a cart just for the Battle books which makes them super easy to check out. We have also provided a list for you to begin! Remember, if you are on one of the teams, any books read for Battle of the Books count for ARC. Our first meeting will be September 2nd. On October 22nd, the students will be expected to have read a minimum of 5 of the books assigned to their group. We are encouraging students to participate as long as they can keep up! In March, we will have an Imagine competition with all the teams. Two of these teams of four students go to a "Battle of the Books" festival in the spring where they compete with teams from District 49. These two teams will also be asked to go to the competition at Colorado College to compete with students from all over the city.
How: Imagine will ask that the students keep a folder with brads of titles, authors, character names, summaries, and possible compeition questions which help the participants review for the competition. (Please see form provided.) Students will be drilled both verbally and in written form to hone their skills at remembering detail from their reading. Practice may occur during the school day, at lunch, or the occasional format after school. The competition itself tests their skills and also teaches sportsmanship as they practice being gracious winners or losers. The program is designed to expose children to literature, which will make them well-rounded readers as they enter middle school.
Action Points:
1. Student & Parents need to sign the permission slip. Dates to Remember:
2. Students need to begin reading as soon as possible. September 2nd-Permission slips due
3. Students need to purchase a composition book and 1/2 inch binder. October 22nd-5 Books must be read in order to continue participating
